Dishwasher fills with water, but doesn't continue

My Kitchenaid dishwasher was working fine up until today. It is probably near 10 years old and was here when I bought the house. I heard the unit begin filling with water, but that is all that occurred. Is there something wrong with the motor? Any suggestions as to what my husband can do as far as home repair since he is quite handy. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the cycle switch/timer needs to be replaced.

Gently rotate the knob through the cycles and listen if you can hear the various components kick in as your rotate the knob.

I did what you suggested but not sure I understand. I rotated the knob and hear the water fill mode then nothing then the water drain mode etc and it will heat to dry. Does that mean it could be the switch?
