View Full Version : GE compressor relay
old GE fridge

My fridge is not working properly. It's an old GE (model number TBXY14SPGLAD), probably about 15 years old (the inspection tags are dated 1991). The lights and fans work, but it's not blowing cold air. I did all of the tests on the ACME troubleshooting guide, and all the parts passed except the compressor relay. I did the continuity test on the compressor relay, and the resistance did not change from 0 to infinity ohms when I inverted the switch from right-side-up to up-side-down (and vice versa). Also, I did not hear the "Magnetic click" of the switch after inverting the relay. Could this be the only problem? I guess I just don't know what this relay does: if it goes bad could it keep everything from working properly? Any help/advice is appreciated.

Obviously, there are other factors to consider and the relay may not be the sole source of your frustrations.
Temporarily bypass the relay and see if that fixes your problems.

How do you do that? I posted in

Your relay contacts may have arc welded shut and burned out the start winding of the compressor. The top pin of the compressor is common, the left side is start, right side run. Check with an ohm meter.

Thanks. So do I remove the wires from the relay and connect them directly to the posts of the compressor to see if the freezer runs and the relay is the issue? If so, do I connect the white wire to the top post and what about the other two wires? THanks
