I have a GE refrigerator side by side app. eight years old. This past weekend the thing just warmed up and quit cooling. I cleaned the cooling coils in the back, they were dirty, no help. I since have gained access to the evaperator coils evap fan and all the good parts. The comp. runs the coils ice up i'm not sure about the defrost timer yet. I have noticed the evap fan will not run, replaced it still nothing. The model # is GSS22JFMBWW my question now is what controles the evap fan, to me if the cond. fan is running so should the evap fan ... yes or no? One last note the floor of the freezer is ice cold it will freeze milk but the upper side is sixty degreese. Any comments or thoughts on this matter will help.

The condenser fan runs when the compressor is running. The evaporator fan runs when the theromostat calls for it to run. If your coils ice up too much the freezer and the fridge will not get cold enough. The ice can also keep the fan from turning. The defrost timer is a must to prevent the ice buildup.

This system has a so called adaptive system for defrost control. I do not know what this is and were is it? There is a n evaporator sensor on the same plug as the fan. Were is the thermostate for the evap. fan?

The freezer temp. control is the theromostat. The fridge control just controls a flap letting more or less cold air from the freezer into the fridge. The fan should run on the lowest setting and cut off in the highest or off position.
An adaptive system for defrost control means that it remembers the length of the last defrost cycle, the number of times doors are opened etc. and uses this information to determine when to defrost and the length of the next defrost. This means sensors everywhere and electronic components to go with them.
The GE has what I've heard called a motherboard and looks like something straight out of a Hewlett Packard. It's probably easy to replace if your sure thats your problem but probably expensive.
