My hot faucet is leaking and needs plumber's attention, but I wanted to do a cold wash so I unattached the hose from the wall and left the loose end hanging over my laundry tub.

Now when I do a load of washing cold water comes out the loose end of the hot hose.

Is this supposed to happen? I read that washing machines cycle water during a wash cycle, but should it come out the end of the hose? I don't understand how that could be, since that hose (if it was attached to the faucet) surely wouldn't like water trying to come out the end.

Or is my washing machine broken?

I;ve never experimented in that particular way so I don't know if it should. It migh depend on the temp selction you chose. You don't have to disconnect the hose, you could just shut off the valve.

As long as hot or cold water fill the machine when they are selected, I suspect the machine is working properly,
