View Full Version : testing refrigerator thermostat
When testing my refrigerator temperature control with a digital ohmmeter, it read infinity with the control in the off position and about 1.2 ohms at the other end. Should the resistance value have changed as the control was turned? Thanks for any help.

The temperature control is essentially an on & off switch. "On" occurs at a variable position dependent upon the temperature of the fridge. So when testing, it should read infinity at "off" and up to the temperature of the fridge. Once the control is set to a temp cooler than the fridge, then the reading should change to full continuity (such as your reading).
I hope that answers your question
Thanks for your response, DIY guy--maybe my temperature control is not the problem. Let me give you some background. I have my freezer control set to coldest, so essentially it has closed the damper to the refrigerator. But my fridge keeps running and running even when the refrigerator temp control is set to warmest (fridge temp is reading zero degrees). It never shuts off. Does this indicate the temperature control is faulty, even though it seems to behave correctly when tested with an ohmmeter?
