I hope someone can help. I'm low on funds and needed a new fridge. My buddy was getting new appliances and I was taking his old.

He called today to tell me the freezer went out on the fridge, is this something I can fix reasonably? Something easy like a thermostat?

What could it possibly be? I don't want to haul home a piece of trash if I cannot fix. Thanks for any help folks.

It's about a 13 year old Kenmore. I have no model numbers yet, but it is a freezer on top model.

My current fridge is a 20+ year old in-efficient Amana.

I'm low on cash, but I'm not trash. :)

We need more information on the symptoms, and since the cold for the fridge comes from the freezer there will be a problem in the fridge. I would guess the defrost timer. Check for ice buildup on the coils behind the back wall of the freezer.

Thankfully he never bothered to clean the coils. It was also on his carpet as he recently had his floors refinished. Before I it brought home, I used a air compressor and totally cleaned the cooling coils. Seems to be working fine, but it was making some strange sounds this morning. I may still be somewhat leary. Whew, and the luck.
