I currently have a top loaded Whirlpool washer. It fills up fine, and then it agitates. However, when it gets to the spin cycle, it just stops. This causes a problem because it is full of water! It won't empty. The lid seems to be closing alright. Please help!

Hi
I just had this same problem with my kenmore belt drive washer-- turned out the water pump wasn't pumping. I took the water pump apart and found it plugged with string from a rug.....That's not to say that you have the same problem, but if the motor is running, and the water is not draining, I would strongly suspect a pump problem

This might sound stupid also, but when mine didn't spin, it was because the safety switch on the lid wasn't being depressed. Water had rotted the switch and it fell inside the washer next to the tub. Check that this safety switch is engaging. It will have either a plastic tab on lid that depresses the switch or some other means. This switch is to protect people (kids) from getting hurt by washer spinning with lid open. A washer will fill, wash , but not spin with lid up. I know this sounds simple but lets hope thats it.
