My brother gave me his old refridgerator (20-30 years old). We plugged it in in my garage and it worked just fine, for about two days. Then we noticed that the electrical circuit had tripped. With some playing around I discovered that if I turned the temperature up high on the refridgerator the circuit was fine (fidge light came on). When I turned the temperature down, which would cause the compressor to kick in, it would immediately blow the circuit. I tried the other circuit in the garage and the same problem occurred. I called my brother and he said the fridge never blew a fuse the whole time he had it. I let it set for about a week and tried again, same problem. Then I strung an extension cord into the house and plugged it in and it started up just fine. The difference? The garage outlets are GFCI circuits. Now what should I do? Is there some simple test or better grounding of the refridgerator/compressor that I could do?

It is never recomended to plug a fridge in a GFI outlet, there are too many sources in a refrigerator for conduction to ground.
