My washer stopped working right before the spin cycle on my last load. When I emptied the washer, I tried to run an empty cycle and it filled partway with water and did not continue. When I manually moved it ahead to rinse and spin cycles it just gives off a hum and does not drain the water. When it first occurred, I noticed a faint electrical smell. Did the motor burn up? The washer is about 5 years old.

Not sure what the problem is but here is a starting point:

I would check the pump. If the pump is not working to remove the water it might never go to the spin cycle. Perhaps there is something either cought up in the pump or in the hose leading to the pump that is preventing it from removing the water. Depending on your model, the pump could be electrically controled and if it fails to spin it will give off a hum and perhaps smell like wires burning.
