I have a GE Washer model number WBSE3120B1WW. When it is agitating everything seems normal, and about halfway through the wash cycle it starts sounding like a ratchet. It's sort of like the agitator moves in one direction and not in the other. Is that possible? Is this a transmission related problem? If I start the cycle over again it starts agitating like normal and about half way through it starts the ratcheting sound again.
As always, thanks in advance for any information and/or help you fellas give me.

Pull agitator off and remove the round agitator cylinder. Check to see if it is stripped out. Also if you have a two section agitator check the agitator paws inside the upper section. If everything ok you have a bad tranny.

Nothing is stripped and the agitator is working like it is supposed to. The pawls inside are still working correctly. So I am sticking the new tranny in.
Next question.
It seems to me that metal on metal(tranny shaft and tub bearing) should require some form of lubrication. Nothing came with the tranny and I can't find anything in documentation that tells of lubricating the shaft before re-assembly. So I have re-assembled it dry. However, I will not test it until I hear your response to my question. Should I be lubricating it and if so with what?
Thanks in advance one more time.

The agitator is working fine and nothing is stripped out. So I installed the new tranny and it is still doing the same thing. I'm at a total loss now. :(

It's possible your motor or timer is acting up. These motors can become intermittant. Check schematic and monitor power to motor wires at the connector and see if voltage is constant. If so you have an intermittant motor.
If you have an amprobe you can verify intermittant current.
