How can I tell if a tub bearing is bad. GE Washer Model WPSR3100W2WW. I lay the washer on its side to transport it and it leaked about a teaspoon of oil from the transmission shaft area. Bad transmission or bad bearing? Previous owner got rid of machine because it was starting to leak oil or grease onto clothing.
As always, my thanks in advance for your help.

If you remove agitator and find any lateral play in the spindle that will confirm bad hub bearings and seal. Possible just the top spindle seal is bad. If so that is replaceable. Look for oil seaping out of the top of the spindle.

The machine stayed on it's side for a couple of days and leaked out a lot of oil. Oh yeah, there was a lot of play in the spindle. Replaced the tranny, hub seal and aluminum hub nut and it's running fine now.
