CMOS stands for Complimentary Metal-oxide Semiconductor. Basically it is a chip on motherboard that "keeps" your PC's basic settings, like date and time, device boot order, etc. It is accessed during start-up by pressing a certain key, usually Del or F1.. here is a list I found doing a google search

Technically most chips in a PC are CMOS but the term has come to be used to describe the chip that stores the basic settings in a PC. The CMOS must always have power, so the motherboard has a battery (flat and about the size of a quarter) on it connected to CMOS to supply that power. If CMOS loses power it loses all stored settings. If you ever enter CMOS during boot and make changes, record the original settings so you can change them back if you make any errors.

Hope this helps.
