Have you installed any new devices on your system lately? Either that, or perhaps an updated device driver might be causing this. The other possibility is that you have a virus that may have replaced a device driver DLL.

If you have installed any new devices on the computer since these problems began, try going to the manufacurer's website and download and install the latest and greatest device driver.

Next, get a virus scanner, and do a complete scan on your system.

If none of that helps, you may need to reinstall Windows XP, or do a restore to a "last known good" image, but be careful with that, you can lose things.

The last resort is the Windows XP reinstall. I would get another hard drive, or possibly a USB or FireWire external drive, and backup the entire system to that drive. Then reinstall Windows XP, patch it up, then install a virus scanner, then reinstall all the apps, then restore your data files from the backup drive.

Please let us know how it goes, and feel free to come back with more questions!

BSOD. Here a link that may be of some benefit.

Sounds to me if this keeps happening you have want to go ahead and reinstall your OS from scratch. Just start over.

One thing to try is boot into safe mode and operate the PC from there for a while to see if the problem still occurs. If not, then you can be faiirly sure you have ruled out a hardware issue. However, sometimes issues only occur when the PC heats up, receives vibration or gets bumped etc. So test it for a fair amount of time.

You have also proven that you have a working OS at that level and so the problem could be a program you are running, malware or some other possibilities. So next, boot into regular mode, but start no programs. Let the PC run by itself for an hour and check whether any problems have cropped up. If so, then malware or a program that automatically starts at boot is a good suspect for causing the problem.
