View Full Version : Strange icemaker woes

Not too long ago, my Kenmore icemaker (top freezer) made plenty of ice. Now, it only seems to want to make ice when it is in the mood (which seems to be only overnight). The obvious problem is that the mold is not filling up with any water. If I manually pour water into the mold, it will do its thing and eject the ice. However, it will not refill itself with water after the cubes are ejected. It can stay empty all day long, but then the next morning I may wind up with some ice cubes.

My wife thinks that the heat we have been experiencing lately (mid-upper 90s) has something to do with it. However, we have had this appliance for 8 years now, and the heat has not been a problem before.

Any thoughts on what is the most likely cause of this erratic behavior? If my freezer is not cold enough, would the valve not even bother to release water into the molds? I have not done any formal testing, particularly since it seems to work at least some of the time.

This is just driving me nuts. Any guidance would be appreciated.

You could have clogged condenser coils, or you freezer temperature is higher than 15 degrees, Just check and post.

I don't think my coils are clogged or my freezer is too warm, as my freezer is ice cold (pardon the pun) and has no trouble freezing everything in it (including the water in the plastic trays I am using in the meantime to make ice).

If I am misunderstanding your suggestion, please clarify. Thank you.

Check your water inlet valve to see if it is opening each time to let the water in.
