I have an 8-year old Whirlpool top loader washing machine (Model LSC9355DQO). The machine worked fine until I just did a load with a thick mattress pad and a set of sheets. At the start of the spin cycle, the machine started to make a grinding noise and the agitator did not spin. I removed the wet mattress pad and tried to set the spin cycle again but the same grinding noise was present and the machines still would not spin. Next, I unplugged the machine for 1/2 hour, replugged it in and tried again. Same grinding noise and no spinning. Any ideas on what's wrong and how to repair it? Thanks!!!

A possible cause could be the centrifugal clutch which engages the tub when the motor spins. If the clutch is wore out you will find a fine powdery metal shavings or soot like stuff under the washer on the floor. It can be repaired by replacing with a new clutch which can be done by a do it yourself person.

The belt pulley or the motor coupler could also be at fault.
