detergent dispenser not opening!

My dishwasher detergent door does not open. The repair man (who has now been twice) has replaced the whole dispenser unit, it still does not work! Now I have to wait another week till he returns. I am fed up washing dishes and thought maybe I could throw the detergent in at the appropriate time! Will this be ok short term (Hopefully he will fix it this century) how do I know when is the right time to chuck it in, and do I just chuck it to the bottom? Please help a very stressed washer upper.... repair man has been twice now, two days off work unpaid leave! Than you in advance

While my dispenser lid wasn't working I just filled the dispenser and did not close it. I couldn't tell any difference in the cleaning of the dishes.

My dispenser lid has a spring that had come loose on one end so it wasn't opening the door.

It will also be ok to just put it in the bottom.
