Kenmore washer model number 110.92284100 will not spin when in the spin cycle. The timer advances, the pump pumps the water out, but the unit fails to spin. The motor does run the entire time and there does not seem to be any unusual noises. I replaced the motor coupling because that was in sad shape. The agitator still worked even with the sad coupler, but a new coupler did nothing for the failure to spin. The drum can be turned by hand in either direction. I'm at a loss.

You have a bad clutch and probably dragging brake shoes. Pull motor and turn tranny coupler clockwise till it starts to spin. If very hard to turn you have dragging brake shoes. Post results.

Well it's been a long time coming but here it is. I could not move the drum by hand at all. I took the motor off, the tranny off, and still could not move the drum. The brake mechanism seemed to be stuck. I un-stuck it and then I could move the drum by hand. Unfortunatly when I re-mounted the tranny and turned the coupler it turns freely and never engages the drum. I'm not sure how the brake mechanism works and did not see anything that looked like a clutch.

Pull front panel and turn washer to spin. Watch the disk just above the tranny. This is the clutch housing. If spinning, you probably have a broken plastic actuator attached to the spin tube, this also releases the brake shoes, either that or a bad clutch.
If motor is running in spin and this clutch housing is not spinning, you have a broken gear in the tranny.

I'll check it out after breakfast and let you know what I find. Seems to me that the clutch housing wasn't attached to anything and I could move it freely when the tranny was off. The plastic actuator didn't seem to have any broken or missing pieces, but it didn't seem to be connected to anything that would give it the pressure to actuate the cam and open the brakes. Maybe I'm saying that wrong. When I put it all back together, I turned the clutch housing by hand and it did actuate the brakes and moved the drum too. I don't see where the clutch is attached to anything that would make it spin. I'm obviously missing something in understanding the mechanics of this thing.
How is the clutch attached to the tranny, and what makes it spin?
Thanks so much for the info.

Well the clutch housing is not spinning at all. So if there is a broken gear in the tranny, is it repairable, or am I stuck getting another tranny?

Seems more like a busted tranny. The clutch housing is fixed to the spin gear in tranny and never "free wheels"
Pull tranny and turn coupler clockwise, clutch housing should turn, if not remove cover of tranny and look for busted nylon gear. If ok, you have a bad neutral assembly Pn 388253, comes with instructions. The spin gear set is Pn 285362 all available at www.apwagner.com
Please keep us posted, I have never done this as I have plenty of used ones.
A new tranny sells for more than $150 Pn 3360629, But I would try to salvage a used one from a local appliance dealor's junk yard, just ask.
In my service business, it is rare to find a bad tranny so if you find a used washer, the chances are good the tranny is good!!

Richapplyguy, thanks so much for this info. I ended up with a waterpipe project here at the house, that won't be finished until sometime tomorrow. I will hopefully get the tranny out and apart by tomorrow evening though. I'll let you know what I find.

Well, once again it's been a long time coming, but here is the final situation. I opened up the tranny and this is what I found. Under the large plastic gear is a flat plate with three pawl looking things fastened to it. This plate is supposed to be held to the tranny body by a pin that screws into the body and one of the plastic pawls pivots on the pin. The pin is broken and it broke inside the threaded hole in the body. I don't see any way to get the broken piece out except with a very small tap and then how do I get a replacement pin. I think this might be the end of the story, unless one of you guys has a real good trick for me. :(

Latest update. I drilled out the stud and got it out with an easy out. I've ordered a neutral pack and will be re-assembling it after the kit comes in. Can't wait to see the results of my efforts. thanks for all the guidance you guys have given me. Without your help I don't think I would have ever gotten this far. :D

Final chapter. I installed the neutral pack, ziped it back up and gave it a spin. It runs like brand new. My deepest thanks to everyone for their patience and valuable information. :D
