i have a couple of computers that i use at home, i am not a genious just know basic computing.
When i switch on the pc, it makes all the noises but the monitor , well it goes into stanby mode. I have tried it with other monitors and it makes em all do the same thing. Any ideas as to what problem is or how to solve it?

The most basic thing is that the video card could have come loose and is not tightly snapped into its slot. This happens especially when the video cord is under strain it gets tugged. The fix for this would be to unplug the PC, open the case and locate the video card. Press down on both ends or rock it a little to snap it back into the slot. Alternatively, and probably better, remove the card completely then reinstall the card. If your PC has built-in video card, then these instructions would not apply.
If that doesn't do it, go to Start, Control Panel, Device Manager (maybe through System, Hardware - depending on which operating system version). In device manager, look for Display Adapters. Make sure it lists a video adapter and that there is no problem denoted by an "X" or exclamation point.
If still nothing, the card itself may have failed. If you have a built-in video card, you can repalce it by installing a video card into an available slot and then turning off the built-in card in the BIOS start-up when you turn on the PC. You can get a very cheap and basic card if you just want to test whether this fixes the problem.
Anytime you open your PC, you risk damage to the components with static electricity. Before you touch anything inside, touch the metal brackets/frame of the chassis. This will equalize your electrical potential with the computer and reduce the risk of damage.
