The Plasma is your video portion of the home theater. Sure, it has speakers, but quality sound is usually routed through your sound system. Sometimes people use the TV sound as the center channel, but that can be problematic.
Your satellite receiver has audio outputs, those will feed into your home theater receiver. If you have a DVD player, connect it to the receiver as well. Get yourself a speaker system with at least 5 speakers, plus base module and connect it to the receiver. Array the speakers around the room as the enclosed instructions instruct.
You can connect the video from the components straight to the TV. But an even better way to do it is to use a receiver that has video pass-through with HDMI outputs. Then connect all your components to the receiver and then just one cable runs from the receiver to the TV.
Any questions?

Your satellite receiver should have a digital audio output, and it's probably configured for an optical cable. You will need to get a new receiver as DIY guy says, and run the optical cable to that receiver. Depending on your budget, you could go with one of those all-inclusive home theater audio systems, that come with the receiver and speakers.
The minimum configuration you want would be "5.1" which is 5 speakers (center channel, placed above the TV, left and right front speakers, left and right rear surround speakers ) plus a subwoofer (the sub is the ".1").
