View Full Version : microwave, sounds OK but....
My microwave will not heat. I can hear the magnatron kicking on and off if I do a 50% power cycle, but no heat. Can I assume the magnetron is bad and not even look at interlocks, etc?

Open up the unit and discharge the high voltage capacitor. Then put a cup of water in the oven cavity. Remove the magnetron connector plug, turn microwave on, If the unit still makes a loud humming sound, you probably have a bad high voltage diode. If no loud hum, you have a bad magnetron.
I removed the plug to the magnatron and everything still soulded normal. I replaced the diode and capacitor and it stilll does not work. One time I ran it for 11 minutes while I was "thinking" and the water got noticably warm, but not hot. Suspect intermitent magnatron, I will buy a new microwave, this one was always too noisy for my liking anyway.
