The following is a reprint from our Ask the Expert feature on AcmeHowTo.com (http://www.AcmeHowTo.com):
Question: How do I set a meter to read an electrical outlet that I want to hook my dryer up to? I need to know how many volts it is putting out?
Answer: Reading a 220v outlet is like reading a 110v outlet because 220v is really just two 110v circuits together. There are four wires, two hot 110v lines, one common line and one ground line. So to test, use a multimeter set to volts and expect to see around 110 volts. First test hot to common on one side and then the hot to common on the other side.
