I have a 28 year old whirlpool refer that has worked fine all these years and never needed anything except door gaskets. It stopped cooling and when the compressor tries to start, it humms for about 8 seconds and then stops making noise. I know it is trying to start but can't. Using the testing proceedures, I checked the starter relay, the overload protector and the compressor, and according to the instructions given here in ACME everything checks out ok. What should I check next that might be keeping the comprssor from starting? I saw one post that questioned whether or not the ohm meter should be set to X1 to check the compressor to ground. The poster wondered if the ohm meter shouldn't be set at its highest setting to check for ground. Any thoughts? Your help is appreciated.

a model number would help.
