Hi,
I tripped a circuit breaker that runs some lights, outlets etc in my kitchen. I tried to reset the breaker by moving from middle position to off and then back to on. It would not reset. To ensure it was not being tripped right away I unplugged everything and turned off the lights. Then I turned off the main breaker and repeated my efforts to reset (I assumed that if the main breaker was off and the breaker good it should reset no matter what). Still to no avail. Any ideas? Do I need to replace the breaker?
Thanks.

First, I would ensure everything is unplugged from the circuit. If the breaker immediately "trips" upon reset, it's possible you could have a bad breaker or a fault in the wiring. If the breaker doesn't reset after you turn the main power off to the panel, the odds are that it is a faulty breaker. If you choose to replace the breaker yourself, most important, BE CAREFUL! Ensure you turn off power to the panel, via main breaker. If the main breaker is co-located in the panel, extreme caution is advised as some wiring and equipment parts will remain energized within the panel. I highly suggest you check for voltage in the panel with a voltmeter. If you have any doubts, call a qualified/licensed electrician. :-)

Since you unplugged everything, turned off the main breaker and tried flipping it to the "OFF" position before flipping it to "ON", it sounds like the breaker is bad and should be replaced.
