hot point dishwasher

I purchased a Hot Point dishwasher in April. For the past month it has been intermittent. You had to fool with the timer nob and open and close the door to get it to work . Now it won't work unless the door is half way open with the locking mech. in the lock position. Any suggestions?

If the dishwasher is the model that I'm thinking of, then there is a spring like piece of metal located in the door. When you latch the door (fully), a small pin-like piece from the latch pushes against this spring (which is attached to a switch). The switch, of course, controls the power to the unit as one wouldnt want the dishwasher operating with the door open, huge mess! Unlikely the timer is bad, however, its possible. You might check the door adjustment also. The latch that is attached to the dishwasher tub (the metal stationary one attached to the tub, not the mechanism with the handle) is adjustable. You might try adjusting this, but only to the point that after the adjustment is made, the door latch operates with little force, enough to hold the door snug to the tub. Don't adjust too much that the door latch is difficult to move. Hope this helps.
