I had a glass break during a wash cycle and a small piece of glass broke off and I assume went down the 'disposal' feature of my Maytag dishwasher. (There is a big disk in the bottom of the dishwasher and it grinds the food before it goes down the drain.)

Now, it's making a grinding noise at various intervals during the cycle. I assume it's the glass somewhere in the disposal portion, but I don't know how to get into it.

There are screws with special star heads (I think) on the 'disk', but they are hard to get to. I am wondering if starting at the top is the right approach, or if there is another way (like from underneath).

Seems like a stupid problem to call in professional help for.

It is not unusual for glass to run through a dishwasher. I'm not sure what the "official" position of manufacturers is on removal. I can tell you I have succesfully run glass through the DW and the noise went away when the glass was finally flushed out.

However to open it up, start by lifting off the spin arms. The fileter screen should then lift off, exposing where the glass may be. Deeper in may be difficult to access.

Also, be careful reaching in because the glass will be difficult to see and you could be cut.
