View Full Version : Display Corruption????

I have a problem that just happened related to the display on my system. The display was fine one evening but the next day display had degraded badly. There were series of short vertical lines in sequence running across the screen. They are either pink or green in color (depending on the back colors). This has not stopped any operations on the computer, everything works but visibility is a problem. I tried a second monitor and it was the same on it, so the monitor is not the problem. Is this a graphics card problem or something else? I currently have a Radeon 9800 Pro AGP card by ATI Technologies, running an Athelon AM64 and the motherboard is a MSI K8T NEO. The system was left running over night the day it happened. The system would not come out of sleep mode the day the problem occurred without a reboot. I have checked the connections within the computer and cleaned dust out. I read somewhere it might also be a BIOS problem related to a recent Windows update but I hadn't updated Windows for several weeks. I don't want to buy a new graphics card if I don't need one so I am wondering how to determine if this is the problem or something else. Thanks

Never mind, I got it resolved, Turns out it was the graphics card. I put in another and everything was fine.

Good, I'm glad you got it resolved.

For others who experience a similar problem, one method to deal with this is to physically uninstall and reinstall the card. Go to the Device manager and delete the card and its drivers. Then turn off the PC and physically remove the card then reinstall the card and reboot the PC.

Let windows assign a default driver. Once it appears to be working, go ahead and install the proper driver (download the latest version if needed).

If the problem still exists, it could be a conflict with an update or other new hardware. However, if no changes have been made, the likelihood is then that the graphics is failing.

One thing I find odd is the Device Manager doesn't show anything unless I go into safe mode and log in as the Administrator. Something that was set up on my particular machine, don't know why. I have a new card on the way, Will I have to delete the old card from the device manager before loading the new one?

Normally the device would disappear when the card is pulled. Just to keep things simple I would delete the device manually along with its drivers.
