Have a side by side GE GSS22WGPJCC fridge. Evaporator coil froze to a solid block of ice. Compressor running fine, Cooling fan running fine, Evaporator fan running fine! Think it might be a defrost heater/controller problem???? How should i check. Thanks for any help anybody can give! It has digital temp controls.
THANKS!!!

Check the Defrost Thermostat (switch) on the Evaporator. Should be closed.

Check The Defrost Heater. Should be about 20 OHMS.

I believe all controls are digital. How would I manually initiate a defrost cycle to see if it's working properly???
thanks

Howdy navy4792;
How many numbers are on your display? 2 or 3?
If it is a 2 number display set both to 5.
Press all four keypads at the same time and hold them for 3 seconds. Both number displays will go to 0's and start to flash.
Use the up and down arrow keypads and set the freezer side to 1 and the refer side to 4.
This will put you into defrost mode. The refrigerater must be cool or the thermister will end the defrost cycle pretty quick. If it is cool then it will take longer and give you time to test the componants.

Here is the flow chart to help you diagnose the unit.

Let me know if you get hung up on something.

Hope this helps. :)
