We recently noticed an orange colored build up in the water tubes coiled up behind the crisper. The water has a poor taste but no visible orange color. The filter does need to be changed. The ice maker stopped producing ice, but that shouldn't affect the build up in the tubes should it? Any ideas- I've otten to the point I'm afraid to drink our water!

It could be rust from elsewhere in your home's plumbing. I don't know, but I can't rule out some type of bacteria either.
The water inlet valve may be responsible for your icemaker problem and that valve is shared with the water too. So it could be related, although I can't think of a single case of the valve discoloring the water.

hmmm.. bacteria's not good. How exactly would we test it? would the refrigerator filter filter it out safe enough to use? We do have sulfur water, but have found that leaves a black residue, not orange. Our house is relatively new (7 years old) and I believe most of our plumbing is PVC and copper. We have a well too. Thanks so much for your response, I appreciate the help.
