Hoover Elite 1210 Top loading Washer goes completely off balance all washing is thrown to one side and the drum is violently thrown against the cabinet before stopping. The clothes have to be continually relocated in order to complete cycle. Any advice gratefully received. The springs appear to be OK.

The washer has a series of springs or other tension devices inside to keep it balanced when all that heavy water and wet clothes start moving around. If one of those springs breaks the whole washer will wobble, rattle and the load will be thrown off. I'd inspect for a loose or broken spring securing the wash tub.

Thanks DIY, I tightened up springs evenly and eliminated the out of balance problem but the machine (hoover elite) will only go into final spin dry very occasionally. The pump appears OK.and seems to evacuate the water, could it be the control contacts, as the control rotates to the end of the cycle in the correct manner.Bye the way, this situation occurs in both gentle wash and normal wash cycles.

The contacts in the timer control are a good bet except that it is unusual for it to simultaneously happen on two different cycles. I'd be more apt to investigate the wires coming off the timer. The timer is a possibility, but it is difficult to troubleshoot. Most repairmen would just replace and see if it works.
