Hey Folks,

I just moved into my new house and am looking to make a vegetable garden in my back yard. It's a fair size lot but all grass with shubbery around the fenceline. I'm thinking of putting in two 12' by 4' rows of soil to create my vegetable garden.
I'm unsure of the best way to make the garden though.

Do I remove the grass and till the dirt underneath, or do I just till the grass and dirt and everything?

I'm thinking of building a frame around the beds and adding some top soil as well as the soil here has alot of clay in it. (winnipeg, mb)

Any ideas/suggestions/etc would be great!

Thanks.

Raised beds are a good way to go, they are easier to tend. Furthermore, if you make them tall enough, you can pretty much ignore the soil underneath and fill them with ideal soil for vegetable gardening. Also, you can put down small mesh chicken wire over the ground to help avoid tunneling rodents from eating your crops. Also, pick sunny locations in your yard for the beds.

I am no expert in soil, so if someone else has recommendations, please let us know. In any event, you will need a large amount of soil, so wherever you purchase that material, they should be able to give you good advice on what to choose.

Thanks DIY Guy! I'm going to build them this weekend and see how it goes.
