My GE side by side refrigerator stopped defrosting about 2 weeks ago. I unplugged the fridge to defrost hoping that manually defrosting would solve the problem. No luck two weeks later same problem. Last night I replaced the timer. After I replaced the timer I noticed that one of the heater connections was corroded away and severely rusted. I did not have any electrical connectors, to put the fridge in service I cleaned the terminal and cut the wire clean and put a twist connection cap on the end of the wire, leaving it disconnected from the heater element. The three remaining wires have clear plastic gaps or guards to prevent moisture entering the connection. On the corroded wire that I capped this clear plastic piece was melted away.
Two questions: Is that clear plastic cover to keep out moisture? Do you think that a regular connection with a plastic cover will perform or should I attempt to find that clear plastic cover?

It should be OK for testing... Does the Defrost work now ?

You should be able to get some type of "weatherproof" connectors at a harware store.

WeatherProof Twist-On Connectors (http://www.idealindustries.com/products/wire_termination/twist-on/weatherproof.jsp)

or just use silicone sealant in your Wire-Nuts ...
