Our gas hot water heater makes noises when the hot water is turned on. The pipes are really noisy, especially when the shower hot water is turned on. I'm not sure what is causing the noise, if it is the pipes or the hot water heater? Any input is appreciated.
Thank you

Most water heater noises are normal and nothing to be concerned about.
For troubleshooting and other water heater heater information take a look at our water heater repair guide (http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/homemaintenance/plumbing/appliances/waterheater/water-heater.php)
If you have a gas water heater, then a sizzling sound suggests that condensation in the exhaust flue is dripping down on the burner. This isn't too much of a concern but you should check that you have adequate ventilation and drafting in the exhaust flue over the water heater.
Rumbling, gurgling and other sounds inside the tank are usually the result of sediment buildup. Little pockets of sediment are created and the water inside of them turn to steam when the water is heated and then make noise as it escapes from the sediment. Make sure that you drain off the sediment from your tank at least once a year.
Also, boiling sounds can occur when the water pressure is too low.
