I have a Tappan dishwasher that makes a grinding sound when the unit is turned on. Any suggestions on what it might be?

Maybe some foreign material (eg. broken glass, bread bag clip, etc.) is in the pump causing the sound? Maybe part(s) of the pump are actually broken?
A visual inspection of the pump would likely be the place to start an investigation.
If you need further assistance please post the dishwasher's exact model number *as written on the appliance* so we can look up which dishwasher design you're dealing with. They're not all the same.

That's a start. Now someone will just have to open it up and look for foreign material or obvious defects in the pump.
