I have a GE Gas Range and the thermostat is not functioning correctly. It registers about 200 degrees higher than the oven temperature so I cannot get the oven hotter than 300 degrees or so. Is this a problem with the temperature probe- which I can replace, or is it something else in the electronics.

GE Gas Range I'm afraid that is not enough information to identify the appliance in question. What is needed is its exact model number. If you post it we can look it up to see what appliance design you're dealing with.

You can find tips for locating the model and serial number identification tag on your appliances at the following link:

GE gas range [model JGSP20GER2BG]. It registers about 200 degrees higher than the oven temperature. Is this a problem with the temperature probe- which I can replace, or is it something else in the electronics. On that model your symptom could be caused by either an out of calibration oven temperature sensor (see the following link) or a problem in the electronic control itself.

If the temperature reading is out right from when the oven is turned on, the sensor should be able to be checked to see if it is out of calibration (see the following link). The sensor on your range should measure ~1100 ohms when at room temperature. If its reading is out considerably, it would likely be defective and need to be replaced. If it was within tolerances the electronic control itself would be suspect.
