I have a chest freezer, that the compressor runs a couple seconds then shuts off, after a few minutes it will cut back on then same thing again. I have bypassed the thermostate and controls but it still does the same thing. It has no smell like the compressor has burn up. How do I tell if the compressor is going bad, or it is something else
This is a Frigdaire 99 model MFC15M4FW2
Serial Number WB93104976.

It may be a bad Start Relay / Overload on the Compressor.

I have a chest freezer Please post its brand name and model number so we can look it up to see what appliance design you're dealing with. You can find tips for locating the model and serial number identification tag on your appliances at the following link:

the compressor runs a couple seconds then shuts off, after a few minutes it will cut back on then same thing again. My guess is that the compressor is not running but instead just trying to start but failing. It then cuts out on its overload protector as a safety precaution. Once it had a chance to cool the overload would reset and allow the compressor to try again.
http://www.acmeparts.com/forum/images/icons/icon4.gif Do not allow the compressor to continue to click on and off for extended periods of time or damage to the compressor can result (it is isn't already the cause). At the first sign disconnect power from the appliance for 10-15 minutes. If the compressor doesn't start right up when plugged back in, leave the appliance off until it can be serviced.
I have bypassed the thermostat The temperature thermostat? All it does is allow power to get to the compressor. If the compressor is getting power and trying to run, the thermostat is doing its job.
It has no smell like the compressor has burn up. The only part of the compressor that could 'burn' in any way is inside the airtight dome. It could not be smelled. The relay and overload mounted on the side of the compressor could possibly but they do not have to give off any odors when they fail.
How do I tell if the compressor is going bad A technician would usually directly connect the compressor using a test cord, bypassing the relay and overload protect. If it ran then within tolerances, just the relay and overload might be assumed to be defective and replaced. If it didn't run properly on a test cord, the compressor would be shot and need to be replaced.

Frigdaire [chest freezer] model MFC15M4FW2
Serial Number WB93104976.[/QUOTE] I almost missed that information since it was added 'after the fact' by editing your original message instead of posting it as a reply to our inquiries.
There doesn't look to be anything special about that model so my previous reply stands. The relay and/or overload protector could be the only problem or the compressor itself could be.
The relay and overload protector for your model are linked below if you want to try your luck.
