The following is a reprint from our Ask the Expert feature on AcmeHowTo.com (http://www.AcmeHowTo.com):

Question: Do you suggest that I use drain cleaning products to clear a stopped garbage disposer? I think I've read somewhere that you should NOT use such products with a disposer.

Can you confirm that Drano (or whatever) will not hurt the mechanism. Thank you!!

Answer: I usually don't recommend the use of such products. However, I do believe they are usable in a disposer, but you can confirm this by reading the label on the product. Reasons I don't recommend their use is:

A) they are not as effective on partial clogs, because they flow right by and don't have time to eat away the blockage

B) there is some risk associated with their use such as fumes and splash back

C) I don't like to use chemicals if I don't have to, just my personal prejudice.
