Refrigerator Noise

I have a eight year old GE refrigerator (top frezzer/lower refrig) that makes a loud mechanical banging noise when the compressor shuts off. Also the frig cycles on and off allot however its cooling fine. Any suggestions?

The noise is the compressor dropping back into position as the torque subsides as it goes off. It really isn't a problem and not readily repairable. One possibility is that the pads supporting the compressor have hardened and so the noise is worse than it would be otherwise. You can check those pads and replace them if necessary.

As to the frequency of the cycles. They are probably unrelated and you may have only noticed because of the other sound. Follow our recommendations on AcmeHowTo.com for cleaning the coils and check the doors for a tight seal.
