In the bathroom the two three way switches work fine, but are actually close enough to one another that one would do, so I want to replace one with an outlet but there are three wires (red, black, white) rather than two blacks and two whites like the other outlet---which wires do I use, or is it not advisable? Thanks--Jim C.

As I understand, the 3-way switch has the 3 wires connected to it and there are no other wires. Even tho there is a white wire, it's being used as a "hot" for the switch. If you take out this 3-way switch, the other will not work unless you replace it with a single pole switch. You may not have a neutral and a ground in the box that the switch is located in. If that is the case, you can't place a receptacle there without adding some wiring and if you do add an outlet, being in the bathroom, it will need to be GFCI protected. Hope this helps. :-)
