replacing lightbulb receptacle in a lamp

quick question:

should the two wires 'nestle' somehow in the base of the receptacle (so it fits flatly in the 'cup') and, if so, could you describe the best/easiest way to position them ? Or do they :) just head out down and south whereever they can when everything is snugged down ?
