View Full Version : Ancient Sub-Zero freezer not cooling -- please help save my Easter dinner!

My ancient (~30yo) Sub-Zero freezer has chosen today, two days before Easter when it is full of expensive food, to stop working. The compressor is still running (humming), but the food in the freezer is definitely thawing. All I can tell about it is that when I open the door, I never see the fan slow to a stop the way it does when the freezer is actually cooling the food. So apparently the fan is not running at all. To make matters worse, I don't even know where the thermostat is for this freezer, because in the whole time I've owned it (~11 years) I have never needed to adjust the temperature. But presumably my problem is not as simple as turning down the temperature, anyway. The freezer was serviced last winter because the coils were covered with ice, and I haven't cleaned them since then, but since I normally don't have to clean them at all, I *really* doubt that dirty coils are the problem.

YOUR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE WILL BE MOST GRATEFULLY RECEIVED! I can't afford to buy this Easter food all over again, and in any case I'd have nowhere to put it!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

On the weekend, under such circumstances, the first thing I can suggest is get an ice chest.

Take a look at our diagnostic page, that has everything I would suggest. Here is a link refrigerator diagnostic guide (http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/diagrefrigerator.php)

If the compressor is working and the evaporator fan is not, I make a shoot from the hip guess that you need a new evaporator fan.
