My washer starts and stops agitating

:( I have a 6 year old hotpoint washer. When the cycle starts the agitator starts and stops,If I turned the agitator manually when stops the agitator sometimes start again.and eventually sotps again. I hear the motor is working fine, the agitator feels loose. Did I need to replace the agitator?

If you take off your agitator housing and look down at what is left, you will see (3 or 4) little tabs (called dogs) that allow the shaft to rotate freely whan it rotates backwords but grip the agitator housing when it rotates forward. These wear out and need replaced. 30 minute job and any appliance parts store should carry them.
