View Full Version : Refrigerator compressor not coming on after defrost cycle

I have an Amana side-by-side refrigerator, model # sld25jb. After the defrost timer has completed the defrost cycle, the condenser fan comes on but the compressor does not start. I can manually set the timer to run through another defrost cycle. After approximately 30 minutes, the compressor may come on in two-five minutes after the condenser fan comes on and runs 5 to 30 seconds before cutting off. It may do this three or four time before staying on and running through a complete cooling cycle. The compressor runs fine until the timer has completed another defrost cycle

I think it may be the compressor relay. However, since the problem occurs only after the defrost cycle I am beginning to think I may have a defective defrost timer which I had previously replaced (due to hanging in the defrost cycle) prior to this problem. To my knowledge the compressor was not a problem before replacing the timer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kenlkwr

its definately a timer problem. however for your assurance take out the compressor relay and shake it, if you get a shattered/broken glass noise, its its a bad relay as well.
the defrost and run mode is a joint effort of the defrost timer, main controls, defrost thermostat and to some extend the relay to start the compressor.
hope that takes care of your prob.

Hi bloodbath82,

Thanks for your information. Although I had previously replaced the defrost timer, I agree with you.

At this time the refrigerator is running perfect.

If the problem starts again I will purchase an OHM meter (I had one but I lost/misplaced it during my many moves) and check the timer.

Thanks again,
Ken
