I've been having problems with the freezer drain line freezing up and dumping water down into the refrigerator and freezing on the glass shelves. I have paid two repairmen to clear the line and within three weeks it's frozen back. I have cleared the line several times myself and short of throwing it out the back door, I am asking if anyone knows what could be causing the line to freeze up? I know there is an underlying problem, but no one can tell me what's wrong. The fridge is 4.5 yrs. old and I don't want to spend alot of money on it if I have to buy a new one.

I assume the drain is the one which drains the water after the defrost cycle.

Firstly I would think a repairman would know all of this so it could be something I'm missing.

It could be stopped up at the other end where dust and mold could collect and stop it up.

Or the other end could be stopped up because it's too close to to the bottom of the tray the water drains into.

You can check how fast it drains by pouring water into the drain in the freezer and observing. Is it slow enough to freeze before it drains.

The drain line can usually be cleared by using air to blow it out. The other end is accessable from the back at the bottom of the unit.

I'm probably the one that isn't being very clear. I have to remove the tray on the bottom of the freezer compartment because it's a solid sheet of ice. Once that is defrosted I start to defrost the line that runs down to the drain pan under the refrigerator. I pour water through the line until I hear it hitting the drain pan. The repairmen have done exactly the same thing I have been doing. The last one said he has never had to come back to a job after clearing the line of ice. He told me to call Sears, but I really don't want to waste the money because they'll clear the line and I'll be back to square one. Then, I'll have to wait another 8 hours for them to come back and check it again. I appreciate your response. Maybe I should mention that whenever it freezes up, I have water freezing on the shelves in the fridge.

In my fridge there is a trough to direct the defrost water to the drain hole. If this leaked it would freeze in the bottom and possibly ice over the drain.
If the drain is flowing fast enough it shouldn't freeze up.
