I have a 14 year old whirlpool R/F with freezer on top. When in the defrost cycle the freezer temp goes up in excess of 20 degrees F. When in freezer cycle it will only get down to about 15 degrees. I replaced the defrost timer and checked the temp controller plus everything else that the forums say to do.

When in the defrost cycle does the evaporator and condensor shut down.. What allows the freezer to get so warm during defrost and not cold enough during the freeze cycle. I previously defrosted the unit prior to replacing the timer, since initially it was not defrosting. Would the defrost thermostat cause this condition

Anything else to check

The defrost timer cuts power to the compressor and sometimes the evaporator fan when in the defrost cycle. It makes a circuit at the same time to allow the heating element to begin heating the freezer.

As to the inadequate cold, you didn't mention it specifically, so have you check the door seals for a tight seal all the way around both doors?
