Kenmore Washer Drum will not spin

I have a Kenmore washer that is 4.5 years old. It will wash clothes, but won't spin them (the drum will not spin). When it gets to the spin cycle, it makes an off-and-on noise and the lights (not connected to machine) dim each time it does this. What could be the problem? Thanks a lot for any responses!

I'd unplug the machine and then check whether the basket can spin. There may be a mechanical problem preventing the basket from spinning and so the motor tries, causing the lights to dim and then stops. It repeats the process, trying to start the drum spinning.

I have the simuliar problem, but it will spin on an other cycle. I am suspecting the timer might be bad. Did you find a cure?
