I have a Frigidaire Side by Side that is about 1 1/2 years old. I got it from a friend that had it in storage because he lost the freezer door lower bracket. While I waited for the locals to order the part I put my freezer door from my old refrigerator on it. The seals did not exactly line up but I needed to use the refrigerator. When the parts arrived I put the correct door on and noticed that the freezer was only around 45 degrees. I removed the freezer panel and noticed ice build up on the upper portion of the coils. I expected an abnormal amount of ice due to the increased humidity. Today I monitored the refrigerator and the defrost heater did come on. Shortly after this I noticed ice building up on the top portion of the coils. Is this normal or should ice begin to form evenly across the coils? Am I too quick to assume something is wrong and need to wait overnight to allow the freezer to cool completely?

OK, the technician came by and confirmed that based on the way the cooling coils were icing up -- just on one side, around the thermostat, the fridge has a bad compressor,

That sounds kind of like yours but I would wait and see if frost forms on the rest of your coils. When it's first turned on it starts on one end and works it's way to the other in normal operation.
