I have a whirlpool washer. Two problems: #1 replaced the lid switch by process of elimination. Now although all stages will work, they only work if i manually move the selector. Timer doesn't work now. How can I test it? I think I must have hooked somethiing up incorrrectly. #2 bottom part of agitator works fine but the upper have seems to be basically free flowing.

There is no practical way to test the timer control. Technicians routinely replace them when they suspect a problem and bring the old one back to the shop, where specialized testing is possible.

I am not familiar with two piece agitaors. However, the standard agitator is typically connected with splines to the drive shaft. I would expect a similar connection in a two-piece unit. The splines may have broken resulting the free-floating you describe.
