The floor drain in the basement is backing up with water and gritty black stuff. It first happened when the clothes washer was emptying into the wash tub next to the floor drain. Just now the floor drain backed up again when I was taking a shower upstairs. Sometimes when the wash tub in the basement is draining the basement toilet makes a bubbling sound as well. What needs to be done?

Sounds like you have a slow main sewer line. The water is draining but not as quickly as you are adding water to it. The line probably needs to be cleared or their is another constriction somewhere else in the system. Less commonly could be a blockage in a vent stack of the drainage system.
