Default sensor in furnace

i have a problem with our furnace. not sure if it's electrical or not. i thought i'd post it here though.

here's what is going on....
when it starts up (rheem classic super quiet 80), it lights the flame and just when about the blower starts, the flame goes out (about three or four times a day, otherwise the furnace works ok).

i was told that i needed to clean the flame sensor with steel wool. so i removed it and did just that twice. it still does the same problem. do i need to replace the flame sensor altogether, or is it a more serious issue?

thanks in advance.....

I'm not an expert on HVAC but the operation of a gas pilot is probably about the same as on a dryer or water heater. So yes, the flame sensor is the likely cause of the problem you describe.

However, most systems wouldn't get as far as allowing gas to flow without a flame, so another possibility is the holding coil on the gas valve. It probably has two coils, one to open to allow ignition and another to hold the flow open while the heater is in operation. You may need a new coil (solenoid).
