Default Fridge not cooling, freezer great!

i know it is a lame title line...

Model: Frigidaire Side by side - FRS22ZGH

every three - four days my fridge warms up to a temp of +13 to 14 C. My freezer is still at -11 to - 14C but increases to -22C gradually. I have put wireless temp sensors in both sections.

What I know: Ice / Frost forms on the coils in the freezer section (coz of opening the door - normal fridge oper. I do not leave it open for more than a few secs...)

What I do to solve it: Turn the power off > wait abt 30 mins or so > then use a hair dryer to melt all the frost/ice on the coils in the freezer. After that fridge goes to abt. +5C and freezer to -14C, which is perfect (I think - also based on my sensors).

My settings: Middle for fridge (half way), freezer - one quarter from lowest.

Usage: I have very little stored in the freezer (can see the back of the fridge), and similar to the fridge part. Airflow into the fridge section is set to 'coldest', so air/moisture prob. can backflow into the freezer section.

Age : fridge is abt 8 - 9 yrs old. (2000 - 2001)

Repairs : Timer assembly, defrost thermostat, wiring harness. (2004) - before I got the place. (done by outsiders - so they changed everything!)

So : what do I look for ? if

heating element - can I just put a multimeter and check if I have connectivity? (check element)

defrost timer : how to? (also how to replace - ie where?)

what else can I look for?

if any of you know the part #'s - would also be helpful (i know the mods are good at this).

hopefully, i've given enuf info for a suggestion.....i know this is a common problem....but never on my own fridge

thks in advance...and hopefully some good cooked food in future

Heater Element should be about 40 OHMS

Defrost Timer .. behind bottom Grille, left side
With Compressot running, using screwdriver in slot, slowly turn Defrost Timer until Compressor stops,
then check Defrost Heater to see if it's hot or getting voltage

thanks.

i was again going to ask where the timer was, but i did some searching and found a manual (with parts) and realised it was the bottom grille.

from this site.

i guess my heating element works. Since the day i took off the grille (and did nothing else), my fridge has been working fine. i do however, hear the timer every now and then and it is quite loud, but it still works..so fingers crossed!

Arrow Defrost problem?

It sounds like you have a defrost system problem. You can read how they work and what tests can be used to try to determine the cause of problems at the following link:

That could be signs of problems with the internal gearing of the timer. You might want to keep an eye on it.

thanks dan.

yes that is the part i will need. infact a couple of days back, i noticed the fridge temp went up to abt 15C and the freezer to -23. So i took a screwdriver and slightly turned the timer and it then i heard the timer start again. So it is the gears sticking.

Is replacing this part easy? ie i just take out the two screws and the timer slides out or does the fridge have to be upended to remove/rplace the timer?

thanks again great help on this site.

I've never seen a fridge that did have to be, no. Replacing the timer is usually one of the least complicated jobs that ever needs to be performed.

well then, now i have no excuses!.... i am still waiting for my timer to die completely!...funny...now that i know the problem....it seems to be working longer... but as i mentioned to pat.... ever since i took off the bottom grille, it works better!...

but sometime in the next month / two, i hope to replace this(myself) and not worry abt checking my temp. sensors anymore!

thanks again to both of u...

finally replaced my timer. as mentioned, it was pretty easy to do. So far my fridge is working good.

thanks again for all the help and part #'s. even the store, i bought the part from, was impressed and happy that i had the part numbers and they did not have to search!.

ps. paid abt 42 CDN for it with tax. similar to what i would have paid, getting from US website 15.95 USD(part) + 15 USD (for shipping) + some amt. of customs.
